A Tale of Victimization. Dr. Nowhera Sheikh and Azam Khan

New Delhi / Hyderabad (Report: Mutiur Rehman Aziz) In India, the debate on the rights, justice and equal treatment of minorities, especially Muslims, has been ongoing for the past few years. It has been claimed by various socio-political circles that in some cases Muslims have faced discrimination at the legal, administrative and social levels, while on the other hand the government and the relevant institutions declare these actions as in accordance with the law. This difference of opinion has become an important topic of the country’s political and social landscape.
Critics say that on several occasions encounters, bulldozer operations, arrests, long court cases and administrative measures have caused severe hardship to the affected families. They argue that some people are considered guilty in public even before the decisions of the cases, which not only affects their reputation but also puts their families under economic, social and mental pressure. On the other hand, government agencies say that all actions are carried out in accordance with the law and judicial supervision.
In this context, the names of two personalities often come under discussion, Dr. Nowhera Sheikh and Azam Khan. Their supporters say that both have rendered outstanding services in the field of education. According to them, Dr. Nowhera Sheikh tried to advance the youth through medical education and other educational projects, while Azam Khan played a role in the promotion of higher education by establishing Maulana Muhammad Ali Jauhar University.
Various cases related to financial irregularities and investment were registered against Dr. Nowhera Sheikh, while government agencies took legal action based on these allegations. Dr. Nowhera Sheikh has been denying these allegations and her supporters say that the actions against her were based on political and personal motives. On the other hand, the relevant investigative agencies are adamant that the actions were taken in accordance with the available evidence and the law. Different aspects of these cases have been going through the judicial stages.
Similarly, several cases were registered against Azam Khan. Their supporters argue that many of the cases filed against them are examples of political vendettas, while the government and investigative agencies call these cases legal proceedings. Hearings have been held in various courts regarding these cases, and court decisions have been issued in several cases.
Supporters of these two figures argue that if their educational and social projects had continued at full speed, thousands of students would have received quality education, hundreds of people would have received employment, and the society would have better educational and medical facilities. According to them, lengthy legal proceedings and administrative problems affected the pace of these projects, which also directly affected those associated with them.
On the other hand, critics also raise the question that if there are allegations of financial or legal irregularities against any individual or institution, then impartial and transparent investigations are necessary, so that justice is seen to be done. The foundation of a strong democracy is that every citizen has a fair hearing according to the law, full right to defense, and an impartial judicial process, regardless of their religion, class, or political party.
In a diverse and democratic country like India, justice, rule of law, equality and protection of constitutional rights are the basis of national unity. If any citizen is wronged, it should be redressed through the law and the courts, while if any allegation is proven, legal action should be taken accordingly without discrimination. This attitude is indispensable for the democratic identity of the country, public confidence and national development.
